Did you know that keeping organized doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking? Here are 11 things to do every day to keep you organized.
I always thought my daily organizational habits were common knowledge to everyone. But according to my husband, they aren’t! So I thought I would share 11 things I do every day to keep organized.
11 Things To Do Every Day To Keep You Organized
1. Start your day by making a to-do list and prioritizing tasks.
Creating a to-do list is a great way to stay organized and productive, and it can help you prioritize tasks, set goals, and stay on track. Making a to-do list also helps to reduce stress and anxiety by providing structure and a sense of accomplishment as you work through and check off your list. Creating a to-do list can also save time by allowing you to focus on the tasks that are most important to you and reducing the need to waste time on tasks that are not important.
When I feel completely overwhelmed, I perform a brain dump first. Getting it all out of my head and putting it down on paper helps me see more easily what is a priority and what can wait. I then use this list as a reference for planning my week and daily to-do lists!
2. Create a filing system for important documents
Creating a filing system for important documents is a great way to ensure that they are organized and easily accessible. Start by gathering all of your papers and sorting them into categories. Create a labeled folder for each category and place the documents inside.
Once the folders are sorted and labeled, you can store them in a filing cabinet or other storage system like mine below! Be sure to keep the filing system up to date by removing any outdated documents and adding any new ones.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to back up important documents in a secure digital format to ensure you don’t lose them. Overall, a good filing system can help you stay organized and make sure important documents are easy to find.
3. Set up a dedicated workspace with only the items you need
Setting up a dedicated workspace is a great idea, as it can help you stay focused and productive.
I was fortunate to have had an office for the past two years, but my daughter recently moved back home and reclaimed her old room.
Here’s what to do when you don’t have a dedicated office:
- Choose a space in your home that is comfortable and quiet and that has enough room for all of the items you need.
- Gather all the necessary items you need for your workspace or “Mobile Office.”
- Arrange these items in a way that is comfortable for you, and make sure to keep the area organized and clutter-free.
5. Make a habit of cleaning up your workspace at the end of the day
One way to make cleaning up your workspace a habit is to set a reminder for yourself at the end of each workday. This will help you remember to tidy up and put things away. It also helps to establish a few organizational systems to make clean-up easier.
For example, assign a specific spot for all your supplies and tools, and make sure to put them back in their designated spots when you’re finished. This will help keep your workspace organized and make clean-up a breeze!
All of my essential work items fit into this Brevite Jumper camera bag I purchased a few years ago. I just put everything in the bag at the end of my workday and then store the bag in my room. This is so convenient when I also need to work out of the house. You can check out a more detailed post about how I use this as my work bag HERE!
4. Utilize technology to keep track of tasks, appointments, and reminders
Technology can be an incredibly useful tool for keeping track of tasks, appointments, and reminders. You can use apps on your phone or computer to set up reminders for yourself or to create to-do lists.
My favorite iPhone Apps are :
- Notion or Notes for to-do lists
- iCal for appointments. I always set the alert option!
- Reminders to make quick notes while I’m out. And then I always tell it to remind me at a specific location or time.
This is not a phone app, but I often use Alexa in my home. I can quickly speak and add items to my shopping list, create reminders, and set timers. (There is a phone app for Alexa too!)
6. Set deadlines for yourself and stick to them
Setting deadlines for yourself is an effective way to stay on track and achieve your goals. It’s essential to be realistic when setting your deadlines, allowing yourself enough time to complete the task without feeling overwhelmed.
It can be helpful to break larger tasks into smaller ones, setting individual deadlines for each. I like to time block to get a clear picture of my time to work on particular projects, and I get a realistic view of what my week looks like and where I can squeeze in additional tasks.
Once you’ve written things down, be sure to stick to it and do your best to avoid procrastination.
7. Don’t take on more than you can handle
It’s important to be mindful of your limits and not take on more than you can handle. When faced with a challenge, ask yourself if it is within your capabilities and if you have the necessary resources to complete it successfully. If not, it’s better to be honest with yourself and ask for help or delegate the task to someone more capable. It’s much better to do something well than to take on too much and have it suffer in quality.
8. Break large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps
I love Marie Forleo’s book Everything is Figureoutable. Projects and large tasks can seem overwhelming, but once you break them down into manageable steps, everything is figureoutable!
To get started, try writing out a list of the steps that need to be completed, then prioritize them by difficulty or importance. Once you have your list, break each step up into smaller parts. This way, you have a clear plan to follow and can focus on completing one task at a time.
9. Create a system for storing items you don’t use often
A great way to store items you don’t use often is to create a designated storage area in your home. This can be a storage room, closet, or other areas that can be easily accessed and allow you to keep items out of sight. I use bins, boxes, and shelves to store different items in the same area. Labeling the boxes with the type of items stored within makes it easy to find what you need.
Additionally, keeping a list of the items stored in each box or bin is a good idea so you can quickly locate what you need. This is a great way to keep your home clutter free and organized.
10. The two-minute rule
I live by this, and I am slowly convincing everyone in my household to do the same. I credit this rule as to why my home always remains clutter free and organized, even when I had six children living at home (and two large dogs).
The two-minute rule focuses on banishing procrastination and helping people accomplish small tasks.
Here’s what the rule says: if you can do an action in two minutes or less, tackle it at the moment — and don’t delay.
11. Create a daily routine
Having a productive daily and weekly routine will also help you stay organized.
Plan out specific days and times to complete tasks you routinely have to do.
- Make time one day a week for shopping meal prepping
- Wash bedding and towels every Saturday
- Lay out your gym clothes before you go to bed at night
- Open mail daily
- Make your bed every morning (I know most of us have heard of the speech by Admiral William H. McRaven)
- Have a set day for watering plants
These are just a few things I do to stay organized and keep my environment clean and organized!
