DIY Wood Backdrop

April 5, 2015

At firstDIY WOOD BACKDROP

Since I started posting to Instagram, I wanted to find some new backgrounds for my images. I thought about vinyl backdrops, but I wanted something a little more sturdy. As usual, I was scouring Pinterest and found a food blogger that had created backdrops similar to these. Here is my attempt at a DIY Wood Backdrop!

Here are the supplies you will need:

  1. plank paneling (I purchased mine from Home Depot)
  2. accent paint colors
  3. stain
  4. glue
  5. brushes
  6. rags

I actually made three backdrops from this one pack of planks. Just ask them to cut it down to the size you want and they will do it for you!

I chose three accent colors to put over the stain, to give them a distressed look.DIY Backdrop

The first thing we did (my husband did), is glue the pieces together and let fully dry. This glue works really well, because I didn’t even have to put support beams to hold them together. Although, I would suggest that step if you are moving these around quite a bit.DIY Backdrop

Make sure you wipe up any excess glue before it dries!

You can use a stain on this next part, but I decided to water down some brown paint. I just brushed a thin layer onto all of the backdrops.

Here is what they looked like when I was finished. then, let them dry before putting on the distressed layer.DIY Backdrop

You can play around with how you add the top layer of paint. I just dabbed it on and then moved quickly to blend it in.

This step just takes a light hand of paint and some patience. At first, I wasn’t loving the look while I was making the backdrops, but when they were finished, I was completely satisfied.DIY Backdrop

I ended up with one natural brown, a white distressed and a mint distressed board.
