100 Mile Training | What a 9 Hour Overnight Run Taught Me

June 28, 2026

In this video, I’m sharing what I learned from a 9 hour overnight training run during my 100 mile training journey.

Long runs are always a big part of ultra marathon training, but overnight runs bring a completely different challenge. It is not just about time on feet. It is about learning how your body responds when you are tired, how your mind handles the quiet hours, and what it feels like to keep moving when everything in you wants to be done.

Watch the video below:

A 9 hour overnight training run

This run was part of my 100 mile training and gave me a chance to practice running through the night, managing fatigue, testing my gear, and paying attention to what my body and mind needed over several hours.

There is something very different about training in the dark. Everything feels quieter, slower, and a little more mental. Runs like this teach you things that shorter daytime runs just do not.

What this run taught me

One of the biggest lessons from this 9 hour overnight run was how much ultra running is about problem solving. It is not always about feeling strong the whole time. Sometimes it is about staying calm, making small adjustments, and continuing to move forward.

During a long training run like this, you learn what works, what needs to change, and what you want to practice before race day. Fueling, pacing, mindset, gear, lighting, and recovery all matter.

Training for a 100 mile race

Training for a 100 mile race is such a physical and mental journey. Every long run becomes part of the bigger picture. Some runs build confidence, some expose weaknesses, and some remind you that you are capable of more than you think.

This 9 hour overnight run was one of those workouts that gave me more than miles. It gave me experience, confidence, and a better understanding of what I need as I continue preparing for race day.

Ultra running lessons from the trail

If you are training for an ultra marathon, thinking about running your first 100 miler, or just love seeing the real side of endurance training, I hope this video encourages you.

Not every run has to be perfect to be valuable. Sometimes the hard, messy, quiet miles are the ones that teach us the most.
