Naming My Houseplants With The MakeID Portable Printer

October 18, 2021

Let’s name my plants using the MakeID portable printer! Do you name your houseplants?

Naming Your Plants

Since childhood, I have always given names to inanimate objects. While not being all that creative in the process, every stuffed animal in my room had a name. Even now, I name the few stuffed animals I have left.

So, after becoming a plant mom, naming my new “potted pets” came easy.

I remember walking through Trader Joe’s and spotting my very first Fiddle Leaf Fig, at a very reasonable price I might add. I dreamed of having a home filled with living, thriving plants, for years. Now that my kids were all grown up, I figured I would give plant parenting a try.

As I cradled my new plant on the car ride home, I immediately knew his name, Figgy (I know, creative right?).

I was in love. While we struggled to get through the first few months of his life, he is now growing strong and confident.

Next came my Monstera, another Trader Joe’s find. His name is Sully (Get it? His name sounds like a monster, and Sully is a monster. I told you I wasn’t all that creative.)

Many more have followed, and they all have names. Giving them names makes it feel like they are a member of my family, and that they are important. I talk to them as I feed them water, clean their leaves and give them a quick spin (I rotate them 1/4 turn every 3 days).

As my plant collection grows, I thought it might be best to label all of them. Not just for me, but just in case any of my house guests would love to start up a conversation with them as well 🙂

Creating Custom Labels with the MakeID Portable Printer

The MakeID Portable Printer was perfect for my little plant project!

Supplies used:

  • M1 MakeID Lable Maker
  • Green .63 in Label Tape
  • MakeID Life App (for iPhone or Android)
  • Popsicle Sticks

I decided to use the green label tape for aesthetic purposes.

I purchased these popsicle sticks at my local Michael’s, and I opted for the wider ones. My labels were still slightly thicker than the sticks, so I just trimmed them down a bit.

It was so easy to create labels with the MakeID Life App. There are customizable emojis, symbols, and several templates to choose from too!

Here are a few of my plants. Tigra (looks like he has tiger stripes) and Snape (he is a snake plant).

Groot is a Pathos, and there are quite a few Baby Groots running around. Propagating my plants has been an entirely different project that I have loved! Mula is my Money Plant, not hard to guess why that’s his name.

Let me know if you’d like to meet some of my other plant babies! I think I’m going to need a bigger house again, just to have more space for them 🌿
